Probably everyone has a pretty romantic image in his head of New York in the pre-Guiliani-era with its blooming music and art scene, which might not always match reality. Have a look at this nice little video of a goup of friends, taking the D Train from Union Square to Coney Island in 1987 and indulge in a little New York nostalgia.
